5 New Accessories For Your Outdoor Space

Outdoor Living >

Life outdoors. You’re ready.

If you spent months deprived of fresh breezes and green surroundings, now’s the time to indulge.

Celebrate summer with a festive picnic. But embrace your locavore sensibilities and set your al fresco meal in your back yard. It’s the space you’ve been eager to use.

“People have invested in living in their outdoors,” says Debra J. Mednick. executive director and home industry analyst for NPD Group, the Port Washington, N.Y., research firm. You may opt for a meal on the patio, hang out at your fire pit or enjoy the garden, says Mednick.

Choosing a site that’s only steps away means you can set up accessories that make your picnic a special pleasure. Here are new products to inspire you.

Portable Pizza Oven

You could call for delivery, but why break the picnic mood when you can pull a succulent pizza from an oven on the patio?

The Pizzeria Pronto portable pizza oven preheats in 10 minutes, reaches 700 degrees F and can bake a pizza in as little as five minutes, according to the manufacturer.

The oven comes with baking stone, cleaning brush and gas inlet assembly. It runs on propane; a tank is not included. ($300, cookware stores)

Naturally Cooling Ceramics

Chill with this award-winning line of Finnish serveware. Soak Magisso’s ceramic pieces in cold water for a minute or two and contents will stay cool for two to four hours.

The bar series includes Champagne cooler, carafe and ice bucket with tongs.

The serving pieces, including a 2.5-liter bowl (about 10 cups), 1-liter bowl, serving cups and plates, are just coming into stores this summer. ($25 to $69, specialty stores)

Himalayan Salt Plate

This slab of mineral-rich Himalayan salt can be heated or chilled to extreme temperatures. You can use the salt plate as a substitute for a plank in grilling, or you can chill it in the refrigerator and top with sliced fresh vegetables for serving. The salt plate is naturally anti-microbial and can be reused, though it will diminish over time. (about $35, cookware stores)

Anti-Bug Lantern

Create a barrier against mosquitoes and other insects with a lantern that silently releases an insecticide into the air, providing up to four hours of protection in a 15-ft. by 15-ft space. The ThermaCELL lantern also can function as a light, with or without the repellent. ($22.99, camping stores and mass merchants)

Traveling Knives

Don’t break the relaxing mood of the outdoors to dash inside for a knife or wine opener. With the Wüsthoff Gourmet Travel set, including 3-inch paring knife, 6-inch cook’s knife, 5-inch serrated utility knife, waiter’s corkscrew, kitchen shears and mini picnic sharpener, you’ll have the pieces you need, even if your gourmet travel only takes you as far as the deck.
